That is the entire principle, and it is unusual among style rules in that following it costs less rather than more. Accessories are the one area where restraint and economy point the same way — which is fortunate, because they are also where the giveaways are most visible. A bag sits on the bar at eye level for two hours. Hands are in view every time you lift a glass or turn a page.
The three
The bag
It will spend the evening on a marble bar top, a restaurant floor, or the back of a chair. It is looked at more than anything else you are carrying.
CarryA mid-sized structured leather top-handle bag or a clean tote, in black, cream or tan, with a simple clasp and no visible branding.
NotSlouchy canvas, nylon backpacks, all-over monogram prints, dangling brand charms.
The test is mechanical: put it down on a hard surface and see whether it holds its own shape. A bag that collapses into a heap reads as inexpensive regardless of what it cost, because structure is the thing cheap bags cannot fake.
The watch
Visible whenever your wrist is, which in a bar is constantly.
WearA slim analogue watch on a genuine leather strap — alligator or calf, black or dark brown. A small round or rectangular face.
NotOversized digital sports watches, fitness trackers on rubber straps, wide faux-diamond bezels.
In a room where everyone is checking a phone for the time, wearing a watch signals something specific: that you are not waiting on your screen. That reads as self-possession, and it cannot be bought by someone glancing at their phone every four minutes. The watch is only the visible half of it.
The jewellery
Close range only. Nobody sees your earrings across a room — they see them at conversational distance, under lamplight, which is unforgiving.
WearThree pieces at most, worn together: small pearl or diamond studs, a fine gold chain with a small unbranded pendant, a single slim band ring.
NotStacked bracelets that clink, heavy plated chains, plastic or resin pieces.
Three is the number where a collection still reads as chosen. Beyond it, individual pieces stop being noticed and the effect becomes quantity — which is the impression you were avoiding. The clinking matters too: sound is a tell no photograph captures and every dinner table does.

What fails up close
Several things that photograph perfectly well do not survive conversational distance.
Plated metal turns at the skin — a green mark under a ring or at the back of a neck is noticed, and by the person standing nearest to you. Resin and plastic have a particular dullness under lamplight that no polish corrects, because the problem is that they do not refract. Faux leather at a watch strap cracks at the fold within a season, always in the same place.
None of this is an argument for spending a great deal. A pair of real freshwater pearl studs costs less than a night out. It is an argument for buying materials that behave properly at close range, and then buying fewer of them.
The counting rule
If you take one thing from this page, take the number.
Before you leave, count what you are wearing. Earrings, necklace, ring, bracelet, watch. If the total is above four, take something off — and take off the piece you are least sure about, which is almost always the one you added last and the one you would have to explain.
Nobody has ever looked underdressed for wearing one good thing. A great many people have looked as though they were trying, for wearing four.
